This post
is dedicated to my big cousin Shirley Coleman Landrum although she is only a year older than
me. We are sister's daughters, my mom being the older sister and her mom is the
middle sister of the girls. Growing up we would visit their home in what I like
to call going up to country. We did not do anything in particular although I
liked going for walks down the quiet roads, picking fruits and berries and just
hanging out in the peace and quiet.
As little
girls do, we grew up and went our own ways. She got married and traveled the US and world as
a military spouse. I went my route of college, grad school then law school. We
have always kept in touch and visited each other when we could either in cities
we were in or when we returned home for family events happy ones and sad.
I always
admired how brave it was of her to leave home and set off to new adventures. I
wanted to travel and experience different cultures, see exciting places, eat
exotic food etc. She would say she admired me and wished she would have
gone to school when I did. I always reminded her of her goals for school and
constantly asked her over the years about it and how it was going. She reminded
me just yesterday how I would call and would just say you know what you have to
do.
Well I am
proud to say I was there to see her walk across the stage at the University of South Alabama
in Mobile to
receive her Bachelor of Science degree in Education. So proud of you
cousin. You did not give up even when that math was causing you all kinds
of aggravation. You did it!
So she wanted to be like me in
terms of completing her education and I wanted to be like her traveling and
experiencing new places and things. Look at us now, she just graduated and I’m
traveling! Everyone has a season and we are in ours. Blessings come to those
who believe and work hard.
